What is a music video treatment?
A music video treatment is simply a document that conceptualises the ideas and themes a director wishes to explore, it is usually created with an organised short script and storyboard.
Where to start
The is no blueprint formula to structuring creative ideas but a good place to start is the name, hook or main message of the song. Several listens and speaking to the artist is helpful to narrow this down, after this a short brief can be written to capture the essence of the video.
Example

Location Scouting:
When everyone is clear on the main message of the song, we can start to think about the locations that help to tell this story. A good standard to keep is a minimum of 3 locations, this makes sure there is a variety of looks in the video. For each location thought should be given to different colours, outfits and props for the artist to further expand on the main message. During filming and performance shots, flexibility should be given to taking a variety of close ups (Broll), medium and long establishing shots.

Mood Board
Lastly a Mood Board of stills from video references really help bring to life the look and feel of the music video. Through this planning process involving the artist ensures you clarify the goals for the project which usually greatly affects performance once filming actually begins.
